Well, you might say what sun has got to do with Startups?
Yes, seems like Sun is looking over the shoulder of the huge corporates to see what can be done with startups. I think it is cleaver move that they are doing. These days when infrastructure for technology is commodity, the tail of small technology companies with limited resources , is getting longer and is biting the market of the big guys.
So infrastructure company like Sun that is heavily based on those big corporates now see that the tail is getting more and more market share.
Anyway, I was invited to a kind of interview/talk/discussion with 3 Sun representatives. I came to the talk with no defined agenda snd the talk went very smooth and light.
During this talk few things came into my mind. If you think of it, what we like most as start ups is our freedom to choose our hardware, our OS, our tools and the preferred programming language.
Most of us use Open source for that. and as I see it, Java is the language that give to the perfect freedom to choose your stack. To choose OS, to not be bind to certain hardware, etc...
Java is free, so a very big open source community was developed around Java. You can really find everything you need on Java based open source.
And who gave us this gift???
Thats right... Sun.
People tend to forget that, and I found that sun also forgot that. Maybe it's the drive to monetization, maybe they just were not so focused about it, but damn they created a monster which is now running unleashed in the form of a huge Open source community.
This Open source monster is the opposite of what we figure ourself when we hear about sun and their Mega servers that cost Mega $$$ to run mega Oracle installations with Mega $$$ per CPU license.
The fact is that if someone is initiating a startup company the last brand he think of is Sun, just because sun is under the perception of big corporates. yes you then go and download Java and continue fro there on the open source world which is huge when running on Java.
and Sun, they are left behind and nobody remember they were here first.
My tip to these Sunies in the room was... take a look at Red Hut, or MySql AB. Look what they did. they embrace the open source community, they give tips , forums, Q&A, webinars... for free. and all over a totally free product. and everybody using it knows it is the one place to look for information.
I told them, why don't you embrace the open source community that code over and for Java. Be there for these people, acknowledge them. make Sun the one and only place for everything about java. Then and only then can tell me there is a great new spark processor i should try.
I hope they will try it.
maybe re brand it - My suggestion... call it "SunJ" ;-)
